The climate of Malawi is tropical and similar to Zambia with a hot wet season between November and March. Malawi gained independence in 1964 under the leadership of Dr Hastings Banda and in 1975 the centrally placed Lilongwe displaced Zomba as the capital, although Blantyre remains an important financial centre for the country.
